The voice-mimic party game for one phone and 2 to 12 friends. By PANSL LLC.

Support

Questions, problems or ideas: email support@lumin-industries.com. A real person reads it, usually within a day or two.

No account needed. There is nothing to sign up for or sign in to, and no password to reset. Backtalk works entirely on the device it is installed on, including in Airplane Mode.

How to play

One phone goes around the room. One player says a word (five seconds, tops); Backtalk plays it backwards; everyone else records their best copy of that backwards noise; the copies are flipped back around and the closest one wins the round. Tap How to play on the home screen for the illustrated rules, or Try it to hear yourself backwards in twenty seconds.

Common questions

Why does Backtalk ask for the microphone? The whole game is recording short clips and playing them backwards. The mic is live only while someone holds the record button (at most 5 seconds), never in the background. Turn it off or on any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone.

Why does it ask for Speech Recognition? Only for the robot judge, and only when you tap Ask the robot — or once at the start of a Teams or Duel game, where the robot scores every round. Recognition runs on your device with Apple's on-device engine; no audio is sent to Apple, to us, or to any AI service. Say no and the robot still judges by ear. Change it any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Speech Recognition.

Is there an AI service behind the robot? No. The robot judge is two things that both run on your device: Apple's Speech framework with on-device recognition required, and a comparison of the two recordings' sound written into the app. The voice that says the word in Duel is the standard voice built into iOS. The app has no networking code at all.

What gets kept, and where? Nothing, unless someone taps Keep ⭐ or Share ↗️. Kept clips live in the app's own folder on the device (out of your backups), up to 100, under Clips; delete them there, in Settings, or by deleting the app. Game recordings are deleted when the game ends.

How does sharing work? Only through the standard iOS share sheet, with one file you just made (a short video, a sound file or a picture card). The app has no destinations of its own and never uploads anything. Before exporting another person's voice it asks you to check with them. Settings › Keep & share clips hides every Keep and Share control.

The robot says "Ears only". Speech recognition is off, unavailable, or iOS is still setting up its on-device speech pack for your language (a fresh install; that is the system's own Siri & Dictation download, not the app — Backtalk makes no network requests); the robot scores by comparing sounds instead. The game is unaffected.

Echo Chain or Decoder is very quiet. Those modes play through the earpiece on purpose, so only the person holding the phone hears the secret. On an iPad, which has no earpiece, tap the chip to use the speaker.

Table mode on iPad. Lay the iPad flat in landscape and both sides of the table get a column; switch it off in Settings or from the Quit menu.
